Sunflower Hollow Quilting

Whether you’re threading a needle for the first time or coming back to an old love, you’re in the right place. Together, we’ll cover the basics, make real projects, and I’ll share tips and tricks I’ve gathered over the years at the sewing machine.

If there is one thing I have learned in the quiltyverse, it is that there are a lot of opinions on how something should be done. While many aspects of quilting are tried and true (traditional) ways, there is always “more than one way to skin a cat”, as they say. Each of us learns and processes information differently, and that is okay!

There are no quilt police here; do not feel obligated to do things just like I do. The best way for you will be the one that is most comfortable and works the best for the way that you work.

Remember, nothing here is about perfection; it’s about creating something meaningful and finding immense amounts of joy in the process.

Sewing Essentials

Tools and materials needed to complete most projects.

  • Sewing machine
  • Rotary cutter
  • Machine needles
  • Self-healing mat
  • Fabric scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Fabric
  • Thread
  • Batting

Quilting shouldn’t be intimidating – it’s meant to be fun, creative, and deeply rewarding. Join me, slow down, make something beautiful, and discover the joy that comes from creating with your own two hands.

Common Terms

There are many acronyms in quilting – they can get confusing. Here are some of the common terms you’ll see throughout your adventures here.

  • WOF – Width of fabric, assumed to be 42″ unless otherwise noted
  • 1/4″ Seam Allowance – the distance from the raw edge of fabric to the stitching line
  • Nested seam – seams are pressed in opposite directions, so that when they are joined together, there is less bulk
  • RST – right sides together or pretty/printed sides touching
  • WST – wrong sides together
  • HST – half square triangle, square sewn from two triangles, the seam goes through the middle diagonally, from corner to corner
  • QST – quarter square triangle, square sewn from four triangles, the seam goes from corner to corner in both directions
  • HRT – half rectangle triangle, rectangle cut in half diagonally
